How You Can Help
Put victims safety first
Don’t talk about things in front of the abuser, or give out materials, send emails, texts, etc. with information that the abuser could find
Listen more then talk
Don’t assume you know what they need
Check in often
If they decide to stay, try not to judge
Each person is the expert on their life: respect their choices
When Listening To Disclosures
Take a breath
Clarify any limits on confidentiality
Ensure privacy
Stay quiet and listen
Monitor your body language and facial expressions
Monitor the other person’s body language and facial expressions
Clarify next steps
Debrief with someone if necessary
