How You Can Help

  • Put victims safety first

  • Don’t talk about things in front of the abuser, or give out materials, send emails, texts, etc. with information that the abuser could find

  • Listen more then talk

  • Check in often

  • If they decide to stay, try not to judge

  • Each person is the expert on their life: respect their choices

When Listening To Disclosures

  • Take a breath

  • Clarify any limits on confidentiality

  • Ensure privacy

  • Stay quiet and listen

  • Monitor your body language and facial expressions

  • Monitor the other person’s body language and facial expressions

  • Clarify next steps
