Why do women stay?
- The abuser may have threatened to kill them if they leave, or kill themselves or the children or a pet
- The most dangerous time for an abused woman is when she attempts to leave; violence can escalate after they leave
- Victim is financially dependent on their partner – choice between violence or poverty
- Beliefs that they need to keep the family together that it’s better for the children
- Mental health may have been impacted by the abuse – PTSD, Depression, Anxiety and partner may use this against them
- Domestic abuse is often gradual and things can escalate over time. Promises for changes to happen, etc. can pull a victim back
- They love the other person; trauma bond
- Fear they won’t be believed, fear of being alone, fear of not meeting someone else
- COVID-19
